NEWS RELEASE
IMMEDIATE RELEASE
WORDCRAFT SYSTEMS, INC. TO DISTRIBUTE MICROSLATES GLOBAL POSITIONING SYSTEM (GPS) PORTABLE COMPUTER
IRVINE, CA..November 6, 1998, Wordcraft Systems, Inc. - (WORC.BB) - today announced that it has entered into a business partner relationship with Microslate, Inc. of Canada to market and distribute its rugged and powerful, pen computer (Intel-based Pentium).
Equipped with Global Positioning Technology (GPS), the Microslate portable pen based computer also features internal wireless communication, mass storage, and truck docking which permits uploading and downloading of data to and from a central database. Operating systems include: Win 3.1, Win 95, Pen Dos, Pen Right, and OS/2.
The computer may be used with field maintenance crews and is compatible with the companys SWIMpen software product. SWIMpen integrates pen-based computer maps into the maintenance crews daily activities, thus virtually eliminating paper copies of work orders/service requests. Field crews derive major benefits by having a map display, in their true geographic location, open service requests, together with water distribution and wastewater collection system facilities. The crews can as well, perform facility data updates and draw electronically sketched maps; depicting new or modified facility locations. The crews vehicles are equipped with Global Positioning System (GPS), so that a vehicles position can be located relative to new job site locations.
The companys SWIMpen software and the Microslate computer will be marketed to Water Utilities worldwide. Water Utilities are generally highly profitable entities, of which approximately 85% are owned by Municipalities. Generally, the Water Utilities division is one of its major profit centers that can be further enhanced by the companys exceptionally efficient software management system (SWIM). According to the American Water Works Association, there are in excess of 60,000 Water Utilities in the United States. This translates into a combined software market potential in excess of $400. million.
